Campaigning
It’s one way we can create change, or we fight it.
Christians on the Left has a long history of believing in action and campaigning, right back beyond the days of our founder Donald Soper, through Keir Hardie, William Temple and back to FD Maurice.
In past years, we've campaigned hard on the living wage, the bedroom tax, and legal loansharks, to name just a few. Here are just a few of the dozens of campaigns that Christians on the Left has been involved in over the years.
Keep Sunday Special
Campaigning to retain the existing Sunday Trading regulations
Jubilee 2000
Drop the Debt
Jubilee 2000 was formed around the biblical idea of the year of Jubilee, the 50th year. In the Jubilee Year as quoted in Leviticus, the debt slaves are freed, lands lost because of debt are returned and community torn by inequality is restored. The organisation and campaign’s UK Sucessor is The Jubliee Debt Campaign.
Campaign against arms trade (CAAT)
CAAT is a UK-based organisation working to end the international arms trade. CAAT considers that security needs to be seen in much broader terms that are not dominated by military and arms company interests.
'Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is'
…was our own campaign on ethical banking. If we managed in the 90s and noughties to make such an impact on supermarkets by changing our buying habits (remember the days before Fairtrade Bananas, Coffee and Chocolate?), then surely we can make an impact by switching our bank accounts to more ethical providers?
'Cross with Vampires'
…was all about stopping payday lenders and betting shops from sucking money out of our local communities. The campaign specifically targeted Eric Pickles MP, communities minister, to create a new planning category for these businesses and remove them from the protected “Financial Services” category that has hampered local government from restricting their activities and safeguarding communities.
